About Olivet College

Since its inception in 1844, Olivet College's founders and leaders have believed an education should be available to anyone regardless of gender, race or financial means. The basis of Olivet's guiding principle was established by its founders when they wrote, "We wish simply to do good to our students, by placing in their hands the means of intellectual, moral and spiritual improvement, and to teach them the divine art and science of doing good to others."

In January 2012, Olivet launched its current strategic plan, Charting the Course for 2020 and Beyond, providing an inspirational vision and guide for its future while maintaining strong roots to its heritage.  To support the full implementation of the 2020 Strategic Plan Olivet has initiated a $42 million comprehensive campaign, the largest undertaking in the college's history.  The continued development of the college's alumni engagement program will play a key role in overall campaign success.  The Director of Alumni Engagement will play a key role throughout the campaign and beyond and will have an opportunity for great success and significant personal growth and development.

Olivet College is located in south central Michigan in the town of Olivet, MI.  Olivet is a close-knit, rural community offering quiet streets and natural surroundings, yet is not more than 30 minutes from the larger cities of Lansing and Battle Creek.  Both are small enough to be friendly and large enough to boast many big city amenities.  The region offers numerous high quality school districts and an affordable and stable cost of living.  The greater region offers an abundance of beaches along one the most beautiful lakes in the world (Lake Michigan), state campgrounds and wooded adventures, and art and cultural opportunities ranging from outdoor sculpture to Opera all within easy driving distance.

About the Position

Reporting to the Vice President for Advancement, the Director of Alumni Engagement serves as a representative for Olivet College charged specifically with managing the college's alumni engagement programs.  These programs seek to connect the college specifically with its alumni, but also current students, parents and friends in communities across the country.  Success will be defined by the quantity and quality of relationships the individual establishes and maintains to support the fulfillment of the mission of Olivet College.


Develop and implement a strategy to increase the quantity and quality of engaged relationships the college has with alumni as well as with parents, friends and current students including the following programs:

Oversee and support the work of the Alumni Council.  This includes working to recruit new members on an annual basis, supporting and developing council leadership, engaging volunteers in meaningful projects, communicating on a regular basis and promoting the work of the council to the broader alumni base.Develop and manage a variety of annual alumni events to engage constituents on campus and across the country.  This includes Homecoming and regional club events.  Out of state travel may be required.Partner with colleagues in the Admissions Department to build and implement an alumnus focused new student recruitment program.  This includes promotion to all alumni about the role they can have in informing students about Olivet College and then connecting them to the admissions office.  In addition, the program will include appropriate recognition of alumni who participate and are successful in guiding a student to attend Olivet College.Collaborate with colleagues in Marketing/College Relations to manage the content of regular communication vehicles with the alumni constituency.  Ensure timely production and contribute information for alumni sections in the alumni magazine, enewsletters, email blasts, social media sites and other relevant alumni communications.Manage the HEDS alumni and first destination survey programs to enhance our understanding of how our alumni feel about the value of the education they received and the ongoing engagement offered to them at varying lengths of time post-graduation.Work in partnership with Advancement Services to identify efficient methods to increase the quality of existing alumni data and to acquire new alumni data.Coordinate with Academic Affairs and Student Life to develop an Alumni Speakers program.  The specific role of alumni engagement will be the promotion of the opportunity, the recruitment of alumni and the active management of the list of willing participants. Establish an industry leading alumni career networking program.  The program should include the use of Linked-In, regional events and coordination with the college's internship and career services department.Partner with Annual Giving to establish and manage a student advancement program to engage and educate current students about their role and responsibilities as alumni.Participate in college and community activities that promote the college.Provide oversight in the development and administration of budget and operations for the Alumni Engagement Office


Education: bachelor's degree required.  A strong commitment to professional growth and renewal is essentialExperience: A minimum of two years of constituency management and/or event management required.  Previous experience in higher education preferredCommitment: a belief in Olivet College with strong advocacy of its mission and valuesDemonstrated leadership ability to develop strategic plans and implement programs with particular emphasis on program development, volunteer management, personal relationship development, and event and program marketing via multiple channels.  Technology Skills: proficiency with Microsoft Office programs is essential.  Strong computer software skills, database experience and technical aptitude strongly desired  Analytical Skills: strong experience in analyzing and interpreting data to drive program review and new strategies Communication Skills: must be able to present a written message in a clear, concise, interesting, and effective manner.  Needs to possess strong verbal communication skills; specifically the talent to speak effectively and make oneself understood in both informal settings and before a group and refined listening skills to effectively acquire relevant information Initiative: must be able and willing to work in accordance with high, self-imposed standards and discipline; be a self-starter; devote extra effort to get the job done whenever necessary.  Must be able to work in fast-paced, demanding, and results-oriented environmentPlanning and Organizing: possess the discipline to structure personal activities to maximize productivity and efficiency; arrange documentation and information in a systematic manner; establish objectives and plans for accomplishment of goals; set priorities; meet deadlines Flexibility: ability to adapt and respond appropriately to the demands of a very fluid environment.  This includes working early mornings, evenings and weekends monthlyAbility to Motivate: the skill to influence, persuade, motivate, and convince others of the worthiness of the causeJudgment and Decision Making: proven ability to think on one's feet; evaluate relevant information, recognize alternatives, and reach logical conclusions based on the information available; handle day-to-day problems in a practical and effective wayEmpathy and Relationship Skills: the sensitivity to perceive and react with consideration to the needs and feelings of others; competence in developing relationships that enhance understanding, communication, and friendliness.
